The storage network

Freight does not always move straight through.

Warehousing and storage can provide the space between transportation events, production schedules, customer demand, distribution, and the next stage of a freight move.

Facility fit

The right storage facility depends on what the freight needs.

Location is only the beginning. Freight characteristics, storage environment, handling, duration, transportation, and operating requirements can all shape which facilities deserve deeper evaluation.

Storage capabilities

Different freight requires different storage environments.

Explore facilities using the storage capabilities represented in the Commtrex network.

A represented storage capability does not establish current available capacity.

OUTDOOR STORAGE

Handling & services

Depending on the location, represented services may include freight handling, transfer, staging, packaging, cross-docking, and other operational capabilities.

Understanding capacity

A facility can provide storage without having space available for your freight.

Facility information describes represented capabilities. Current availability depends on the freight, quantity, storage requirements, timing, handling, and operating conditions of the specific move.

  1. 01

    CAPABILITY

What the facility is represented as able to support

    • Indoor storage
    • Outdoor storage

  2. 02

    • Only when canonical data represents it
  3. 03

    AVAILABILITY

What can be accepted for a specific requirement now

    • Handled through the capacity workflow

Do not infer available storage from building size, property acreage, or a listed storage capability.

Facility data

A large building does not tell you how much freight it can store.

Building square footage describes physical space. Storage capacity depends on how the facility operates, how freight is stored, infrastructure, handling requirements, and how much capacity is actually available.

  • BUILDING SIZE

    Physical building area

  • STORAGE CAPACITY

    Operational capacity

  • AVAILABLE STORAGE

Current capacity for a specific requirement

Commtrex does not convert square footage into pallets, tons, railcars, or storage positions.

RAIL + STORAGE

Know whether rail actually serves the storage facility.

Rail service can change how freight reaches and leaves a warehouse or storage location. Keep documented rail service separate from rail infrastructure or track that is simply nearby.

The nearest railroad is not necessarily the railroad serving the facility.

DOCUMENTED
RAILROADWAREHOUSE / STORAGEDocumented rail serviceA recorded railroad link: the railroad is documented at the facility.
PROXIMITY
RAILROADWAREHOUSE / STORAGERail nearbyTrack nearby only: distance, not service.
Transload

Storage and transload often solve different parts of the same freight move.

Transload transfers freight between transportation modes. Storage provides a place for freight to dwell, stage, or wait between transportation events. Some facilities may support both functions where those capabilities are represented.

Do not assume a storage facility provides transload simply because it is near rail or a transload location.

STORAGE

Ports & terminals

Explore storage around freight gateways.

Warehousing and storage can support freight moving through ports and terminals before inland distribution, production, transfer, or final delivery.

What is being stored changes the facility requirement.

Different freight can require different storage environments, handling methods, infrastructure, regulatory considerations, and operating procedures.

Warehousing & storage FAQ

Exploring storage facilities

What types of warehousing and storage can I search for?

Where represented in facility data, users can explore warehousing and storage locations using supported storage, handling, transportation, and freight-capability categories.

Does a storage capability mean space is currently available?

No. A represented storage capability describes what a facility is associated with or equipped to support. Current capacity and availability for a specific freight requirement must be confirmed separately.

Is building square footage the same as storage capacity?

No. Building square footage describes physical building area. Storage capacity depends on the operation, storage configuration, freight, infrastructure, handling requirements, and other facility characteristics.

Can I find rail-served warehouses and storage facilities?

Where rail service is documented, rail-served facilities can be distinguished from locations that simply have rail infrastructure or are near rail.

Does rail near a warehouse mean the warehouse is rail-served?

No. Rail proximity does not establish active rail service. Serving-railroad relationships should only be represented where supported by facility data.

Can I search storage near ports and terminals?

Geographic search can provide context around ports and terminals. A facility near a gateway should not automatically be treated as affiliated with or serving that port or terminal.

Is a warehouse facility the same as an industrial real-estate property?

No. The Network represents operating freight facilities and providers. Industrial Real Estate represents property and site opportunities. The same physical location may relate to both, but they remain separate entities and workflows.

How do I find storage capacity for specific freight?

Use Find Capacity to provide the freight, location, timing, duration, storage, handling, transportation, and other requirements relevant to the move.
