The Transportation Industry - in particular, railroads, have always relied on a centralized workforce. They've centralized (and sometimes decentralized) many integral functions that are necessary to run the railroad - dispatching, crew calling, customer service to name a few.
COVID-19 has forced railroads to jump into the modern era - allowing at least some of these functions to be accomplished from home. They've been forced to utilize technology that they've never bothered with.
It gives back the commuting time to the worker and allows for better work/life balance - something that the railroads have always struggled with.
