As a shipper, what do I need to know about transloading? (Michael Kershaw)

If you are a shipper with rail service, you are looking to reach potential customers that do not have rail service. Look at websites like Commtrex that list transloads and locate a transload near your potential customer. When you have found one, contact them and let them know what commodity you are looking to transload from rail to truck and where you want to deliver. You can also discuss the storage of your commodity in case the potential customer only can handle smaller volumes. You should also contact your railroad representative to get a good rate.

If you are a shipper without rail service, look for a transload near you and work with them to see what is involved in shipping truckloads to them loaded on a railcar. I have helped shippers move product by truck to a transload, rail to another transload, and deliver by truck to the final destination. If all of this seems a bit daunting, feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I can help.
